○ Many men were pressured into working in mines opened by foreign companies
○ Vital source of minerals
○ At this point produced 56% of all gold used in the world
● Africa created economic dependence on outside world market long before colonial time

● Mono crop colonies

○ Gold coast
○ Gambia
○ Turned into producers for the overseas market
○ Created dependence on the outside world
● Most profits were not used to strength african economies -> used for western european
and us colonies
