Engine Compartment correct answers • Look for puddles on the ground
• Look for dripping fluids on underside of
engine and transmission
• Inspect hoses for condition and leaks
Oil Level correct answers • Indicate where dipstick is located
• See that oil level is within safe operating
range. Level must be above refill mark
Coolant Level correct answers • Inspect reservoir sight glass or
• (If engine is not hot), remove radiator cap and
check for visible coolant level
Power Steering Fluid correct answers • Indicate where power steering fluid dipstick is
located
• Check for adequate power steering fluid
level. Level must be above refill mark.
Engine Compartment Belts correct answers • Check the following belts for snugness (up to
¾ inch play at center of belt) cracks or frays.
• Power steering belt
• Water pump belt driven
• Alternator belt driven
• Air compressor belt
If the Engine Compartment, Oil Level, Coolant Level, Power Steering Fluid, and Engine
Compartment Belts are NOT belt driven you must: correct answers • Tell the examiner which
components are not
belt driven
• Make sure the component(s) are operating
properly and aren't damaged or leaking and
are mounted securely.
Steering Linkages correct answers • See that connecting links, arms and rods from
the steering box to the wheel are not warn or
cracked.
• Check that joints and sockets are not worn or
loose and that there are no missing nuts,
bolts or cotter pins.
Suspension correct answers • SPRING HANGERS: NOT cracked or broken,
NO man made welds, SECURED to the
, sliding tandem frame with nuts and bolts.
• LEAF SPRINGS: NO more than 25% cracked,
NONE broken or missing. Straight with the
frame. SECURED to the axle with saddle, axle
seat, anchor plate and U-bolts. Looseness is
noted by shiny metal.
• EQUALIZER, TORSION BAR, TORQUE BAR
and STABILIZER BAR: NOT cracked or broken
and SECURED.
• TORQUE BAR- is round, adjustable and on
the driver's side. The Torsion Bar is square,
NOT adjustable and on the passenger side.
Air-Ride Suspension correct answers • Brackets are secure to the sliding tandem frame, not
cracked, bent or broken, free of man-made-welds.
• Control arm secure with eye bolts, is front to back, leads to lower bellow support.
• Bellows are soft and pliable, not leaking and free of rubbing debris.
• Upper bellow support is secured to the sliding tandem frame, lower bellow support is secure to
the back of the control arm.
• Shock absorber is secure to the frame and axle using nuts and bolts. Rubber bushings should
not be bulging and should be soft and pliable. Should not be cracked, bent, broken, or leaking
Spring/Air/ Torque correct answers • Look for missing, shifted, cracked or broken
leaf springs.
• Look for broken or disorted coil springs.
• If the vehicle is equipped with torsión
bars,torque arms or other types of suspension
components check that they are not damaged
and are mounted securely.
• AIR RIDE suspension should be checked for
damaged and leaks
Mounts correct answers • Look for cracked or broken spring hangers, missing or damaged
bushings and broken, lose or missing bolts, U-Bolts or other axle mounting parts. (The mounts
should be check at each point where they are secured to the vehicle frame and axle (s) this
includes mounts used for air ride systems.
Shock Absorbers correct answers • See that shock absorbers are secure and that there are no
leaks**NOTE** be prepared to perform the same suspension components inspections on every
axle (power unit and trailer if equipped)
Slack Adjustors & Pushrods correct answers • Look for broken, lose, or missing parts
• For manual slack adjustors, the brake pushrod
should not move more than one inch (with the
brakes released) when pulled by hand.
