Case 3
Learning goals
1. Translation
2. Structure of ribosome
3. Structure, lifetime and degradation of a protein
4. Protein modification
5. How is the protein synthesis regulated?

, 1. Translation
Initiation (prokaryotes)
Shine-Dalgarno sequence: important for the small ribosomal subunit
(30S ribosomal complex) to attach to the mRNA
 happens through 16S-rRNA

In the beginning a (f)Met (UAC) bonds to the startcodon (AUG).
(In eukaryotes it’s just Met)

Then the large ribosomal unit (50S ribosomal complex) attaches to the
whole system. In such a way that (f)Met is on the P-site.
- A-site: arrival
- P-site: protein
- E-site: exit
When you release the initiation factors and you hydrolyse the GDP + P 
GTP:
70S initiation complex.

But 30S + 50S = 80. While the complex has 70S.
 S stands for Svedbergs = a unit used to measure how fast molecules
move in a centrifuge. But the 30S is not entirely 30 and so is the 50S.
That’s why it’s more 70S than 80S.
