The Laughter Forecast by Sue Cowling
Today will be humorous
With some giggly patches,
Scattered outbreaks of chuckling in the south
And smiles spreading from the east later,
Widespread chortling
Increasing to gale-force guffaws towards evening.
The outlook for tomorrow
Is hysterical.
1. Identify 5 literary devices from the above prose text and discuss how they function
/ work within the passage. (500 words)
2. In a well-structured paragraph, discuss what the poem is about and what literary
device(s) are utilised. How do the literary devices create an image and add meaning?
Briefly describe how you could use this poem in a First
Language (FL) English classroom in a creative manner? (Remember that your lesson

description of the curlews “circled down, down, down like revolving wheels” provides a
visual image of their movement, enhancing the reader's ability to picture the scene. This

The use of similes, such as “her hair, lion tawny” and “the stream which blinked and
twinkled like sequin,” enriches the text by comparing Samantha’s hair to a lion’s mane and
the stream to sequins. These comparisons provide a deeper understanding of the
character’s appearance and the scene’s beauty, respectively, by associating them with
