The pin is comprised of the three Greek letters for D, S, and T, for Delta Sigma Theta. In the middle letter, the Sigma has Nine Jewels that represent the Nine Cardinal Virtues that are the foundation of Delta Sigma Theta. Deltas believe that the strength of the organization lies in the personal integrity and character of the individual member. The Nine Cardinal Virtues, symbolized in the Nine Jewels of the Delta emblem, were conceived as basic attributes which all Delta women should strive to attain. These virtues are Compassion, Courtesy, Dedication, Fellowship,
Fidelity, Honesty, Justice, Purity, and Temperance.
The First Jewel in the Sigma is Compassion - ANSWER-Compassion is the essence of the human spirit. There never was a heart truly great and generous that was not also lender and humane, ever ready to respond to human needs with greatness and mercy. This Jewel is dedicated to the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
The Second Jewel in the Sigma is Courtesy - ANSWER-Courtesy springs from a genuine respect for the feelings of others and consideration for the inherent dignity of every living person. Courtesy is more than mere politeness and civility, those bare minimum requirements necessary for any civilized community. The courteous person gives a second measure of concern for welfare of others. This Jewel is dedicated to the mothers of Delta members.
The Third Jewel in the Sigma is Dedication - ANSWER-Dedication is noble cause is one
of humanity's highest callings and an act of consecration. To find ourselves, we must lose ourselves in living fervently for worthwhile purposes. This Jewel is dedicated to the National Presidents, past, and present.
