LITERATURE ANALYSIS

Modern drama is described as theatrical plays written in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They were written by playwrights that developed powerful methods for storytelling that include the opportunity for the feelings and thoughts of individual human beings to be seen inwardly and overtly. “The early twentieth century saw the development of a new style of theatrical performance: Method acting requires the actor to harness “true emotion” to “affective memory” derived from childhood experience. The pioneer in this technique was the Russian director and actor Konstantin Stanislavsky (). (Fiero, 2016, p. 397). These plays required strong narrative structures and dramatic form in order to engage the reader or the audience and to give them an emotional connection with the characters. While the narrative structure and the dramatic form have two different roles, they come together as one to ensure that the story is relatable to the reader or the audience. The role of the narrative structure is to relate the story the way it’s meant to be perceived by the audience. It consists of the story, the plot, and includes an exposition which sets the tone and theme of the story, a rising action which leads to the story’s climax, and the falling action and denouncement which is the story’s finale. There are many forms of narrative structures that writers can use to tell a story, one of them being a linear narrative structure in which the writer will tell the story as it happens from one point in time to the next without using flashbacks or flash forwards. “To assess the narrative structure the reader would use questions that examine the plot such as who, where, and what.” In Hamlet, Shakespeare told the story of betrayal, death, and revenge through a linear narrative for example, in act 1 the reader is introduced to the main characters, where the story is set, and what events took place to start the story.
