She had unprotected sex last night and is not on any form of birth control. The PN prescribes the "morning after pill." Instructions for this patient would include: - -- "This medication involves levonorgestrel 0.75mg tabs and side effects include nausea and vomiting." - If the patient does not have a period 3 weeks, she should come to the office for a pregnancy test. - The progesterone only medication and the estrogen/progesterone pills are effective 75-90% of the time. - If she vomits within one hour of taking the medication, she should repeat the dose.
