5300 Section 1: Intro to Lesson Planning and Writing Objectives 100% Pass DISAGGREGATING A PROVERB **"I hear and I forget" This thought can translate into a lecture to the students, followed by them taking notes, under the guise that this will prepare them for the next level of education. This is the way most of us were taught. Unfortunately, some teachers still use this method exclusively. Research shows that people remember 20% of what they hear. Lecture is often the best way to get information across, but the method should not be used exclusively. **"I see and I remember." This line translates to the teacher demonstrating and modeling what he or she Is teaching. Demonstration and modeling are valuable instructional strategies and part of the lesson cycle, but again not used exclusively. Research shows that people only remember 30% of what they see but 50% of what they see AND hear. **"I do, and I understand." This line refers to hands-on, high-level student engagement. Research supports this idea, saying that people remember a staggering 80-90% of what they do! Instruction must incorporate a high level of student engagement. PLANNING INSTRUCTION 6 STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION PLANNING 1. Set goals and develop a rationale for instruction to guide the instructional material that is presented to your students. 2. Define Objectives 3. Construct a means of evaluation 4. Create units of study that will encompass the content of the course study 5. Design lessons for instruction 6. Select instructional materials EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES What do you want students to know and/or be able to do after a unit of instruction? This is accomplished by developing objectives fro your lessons Instructional objectives are used in curriculum development to formulate the goals of instruction and activities are selected which will be useful in enabling students to attain the specific behavior identified in the objectives. Learning is more effective when the teacher has a clear goal or objective for the lesson and shares it with the students. You have to decide what you want the students
