CERAD Exam 3 Define a active safety system - Engage with drivers actions to try and prevent a collision from occurring Define a passive safety system - Lie dormant until incident occurs to help try and prevent injury Define the legal requirements for passing vehicles when overtaking - - Make sure road ahead is clear, no one is trying to overtake you and there is a suitable gap - ONLY when safe and legal to do so - Cannot overtake on double white lines, unless the vehicle is stationary Explain the process of tapered braking - 1 - gently depress the brake 2 - increase pressure progressively as required 3 - relax pressure as unwanted road speed is lost 4 - release the pedal just before stopping to avoid jerking How can you us braking techniques to provide a journey that meets the need of the patient? - - Smooth braking when coming to a stop will mean the weight transference will be less so less jolting/ eg less painful for patients with injuries - Braking well on corners will make for a smoother drive as there is more grip for steering and acceleration How do you avoid a skid? - Steer the car in the direction of the skid. To avoid, make sure to look out for slippery surfaces and drive to the weather and road conditions appropriately. how do you prioritise hazards? - What is the hazard How far away is it road layout is the hazard moving or stationary What hazard poses the greatest level of danger? How does fatigue impact driving at night? - At night your eyes are more strained so fatigue can increase quicker. You are less alert physiologically between 12 and 06 How many accidents are caused by faint asleep at the wheel - 1 in 4 How many accidents are caused by tiredness - 1 in 5 How will ambulance performance effect overtaking? - - May not be able to build speed quick enough - Larger vehicles with overhangs so may need a larger gap for an overtake - Can you legally achieve the speed to overtake - Think about your load How would you prepare your vehicle for driving during the hours of darkness - Make sure all windows mirrors, and the lenses of lights and indictors are clean so they can give you good visibility. Dirt can increase glare. Check all lights are correctly aligned and adjusted for the vehicle load. Are demisters working? How would you use TUG to take use and give information - Take - you would use your observations from your surroundings and information from previous situations to take information from the environment Use - you then use this information to inform your decision making, assessing your system, dynamic risk assessments and likelihood of events Give - you would then give information to other drivers, for example your positioning, speed, indications, warning equiptment Identify advantages of the system of car control - The system helps you to process information, make decisions and plan your approach to hazards so you are able to react to potential hazards.
