Gyri - ANSWER-elevated ridges of tissue along the surface of the cerebrum. Sulci - ANSWER-Shallow grooves that separate the gyri. Fissures - ANSWER-Deeper grooves in the brain that are less common, more scarce. Cerebral Cortex - ANSWER-Responsible for speech, memory, logical, and emotional responses, consciousness, the interpretation of sensation, and voluntary movements. This is the outer layer of the cerebrum. Understanding occurs when information reaches the cerebral cortex. Primary Somatic Sensory Area - ANSWER-Located in the parietal lobe ; impulses travel from the bodys sensory receptors and are localized and interpreted here. This area allows you to recognize pain, differences in temperature, and a light touch. Primary Motor Area - ANSWER-Located in frontal lobe, it allows us to consciously move our skeletal muscles. Broca's Area - ANSWER-Specialized cortical area allowing us to speak. Speech Area - ANSWER-Allows us to sound out words, like Broca's Area. Basal Nuclei - ANSWER-Islands of gray matter that help regulate voluntary motor activities by modifying instructions sent to the skeletal muscles by the primary motor cortex. Diencephlon - ANSWER-Major structures consist of the thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus. Thalamus - ANSWER-Relay station for sensory impulses passing upward to the sensory cortex. It analyzes signals, and serves as the post office of the brain. Sensory input goes to the thalamus and compares what you see, with what you expect to see. Cerebral white matter - ANSWER-composed of fiber tracts carrying impulses to, from, or within the cortex. Corpus Callosum - ANSWER-Large Fiber tract that connects the cerebral hemispheres. (it is the road connecting the right and left hemispheres of the brain._ Limbic System - ANSWER-Responsible for human drives and emotions. Mamillary Bodies - ANSWER-Reflex centers involved in olfaction (sense of smell). Pons - ANSWER-Fiber tracts that are involved in the control of breathing. Medulla - ANSWER-Contains centers that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, and vomiting.
