- Illegal settlements - People build on land that isn’t theirs
- Built on steep hillsides - access is difficult
- Socially deprived
- No access to electricity or water (Illegally obtained)
Favelas grow due to Rural to Urban migrations
- Unemployment rates very high - 20%
- High murder rate
- Drug gangs dominate favelas
- Waste can’t be disposed - narrow roads
- Houses poorly constructed
- 2013 - 13,000 homes swept away
- 12% homes have no water
- 30% homes have no electricity
- 50% homes have no access to sewage systems

- 2010 population - 75,000 - Now expected to be 3 times that
