, 1 INTRODUCTION

The following examination portfolio will provide information, definitions, discussions and
elaboration based on the following themes: Media Policy and Regulation, Media
Management, Representation, and Media and the Environment. Internal and external
media regulations in South Africa will be discussed and questions will be answered after
reading the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill. A brief
overview of the Bill and an explanation on whether the Bill can be regarded as internal
or external regulation will be provided. An essay will be written in which a discussion of
freedom of expression and the limitations thereof will be explained, and whether the
Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill enhances or hinders
freedom of expression. Michael Porter's Five Forces model will be identified, and a
comprehensive assessment of each force will be elaborated. Under representation, a
magazine advertisement that effectively illustrates the theoretical concept of simulacrum
will be selected. A comprehensive explanation of the simulacrum theory in the context
of representation will be defined, an evaluation of whether the chosen advertisement
can be categorised as a representation of simulacrum will be made. Additionally, an
elaboration on four signs from the chosen advertisement concerning the concept of
"profound reality" will be discussed. An essay on how South African media have dealt
with issues of Africanness and South Africanness in coverage of issues around
xenophobia will be explained. Lastly, under gender and media an essay that critically
analyses how the media constructs and perpetuates stereotypes related to gender will
be discussed. Information about challenges experienced by journalists when
representing nature will be provided.
