Summary EDU 120: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
The nature of human 'life and social interaction has been of concern to human society from time immemorial. In ancient society there were ways of maintaining cohesion in society. There were specific people assigned leadership roles. The people had their values and norms clearly laid out. These helped hold society together and cement relationships. There were established procedures of dealing with any form of deviance. However, rapid social and political changes have taken place in modern society and immensely affected the integrated African social network. This chapter therefore attempts to analyze how society operates from a sociological perspective. Specifically, an attempt is made to define sociology, analyze its origin, theories and emergence, and why sociology is regarded as a science. Efforts are also made to discover the relationship between sociology and other fields, its purpose and use in education, issues and concerns and its branches and basic concepts.
