Describe the work of Fred Griffith- studied 2 strains of strep 1) S strain- appeared smooth and was virulent 2) R strain- 'rough' in appearance and avirulent - There are several variants of the strains (IIS,IIIS,IIR,IIIR) - IIS can mutate to IIR, but never to IIIR, IIIS mutated to IIIR but never IIR. -When type R injected in mice it survives -When type S injected into mice it dies - However when heat killed IIIS and IIR injected into mice they died and IIIS was recovered -Conclusion was that a 'transforming principle' allowed the IIR cells to transform into IIIS.
