1. What would you say to those who believe Africa lacks the expertise in
responding to pandemics?
I certainly believe that Africa has the expertise looking at their response to the
pandemic, i.e., the early introduction and implementation of the nationwide
lockdown on March 15, 2020, whereby South Africa implemented strict
"evidence-based interventions" with immediate effect, such as hand washing,
mask-wearing, and social distancing, the imposition of strict lockdown
measures, i.e., the immediate closure of its borders, and the cancellation of
flights, all of which were introduced to contain and prevent the spread of the
virus.1
However, I do not believe the question should be whether anyone believes that
Africa lacks "expertise" in responding to pandemics. Rather, the focus should
be on the "red flags" or corruption associated with the Covid-19 pandemic that
exposed the greed and the ability for politicians and crooks to exploit the crisis,
E.g., through the state's resistance to transparency and accountability among
other concerns, e.g., in the form of dubious deals and "tenders" being awarded
to opportunistic companies for PPE contracts, and through the misappropriation
of funds earmarked for different relief packages and grants without the
necessary due diligence being conducted.2
