Alliteration - Alliteration is the repetition of the first consonant sound in words, as in the nursery rhyme "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. P sound is repeated throughout the nursery rhyme Syllable - A syllable is the sound of a vowel created while pronouncing the letters A, E, I, O, U and their combinations. The number of times that you hear the sound of a vowel is the number is the number of syllables in a word. Onset - An onset is the beginning sound in a word, before the vowel. Rime - A rime is the vowel and all the letters after. What is phonemic awareness? - phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes--in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become more aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of speech sounds, or phonemes (the smallest parts of sound in a spoken word that make a difference in a word's meaning).
