February, 2024 Teenage Pregnancy
Assessing varying elements influencing physical, mental and social health is essential when it comes to health problems associated with teenage pregnancy. Teen mothers are far more predisposed to physical health conditions they experience during pregnancy and childbirth such as anemia, low birth weight, and premature delivery. Because of this, a teenage mother's health can influence her infant in such a way that the baby is likely to be at a higher threat of certain diseases and delayed in their developmental milestones (Hans & White, 2019).
Teenage pregnancy can affect emotional and mental wellbeing of both young parents. The worry level, anxiety and depression symptoms may increase in addition to social stigma, which could deepen their low self-esteem. Teen parents and child’s health significantly will depend on the former’s emotional and mental health (Hans & White, 2019).
The health problem of teen pregnancy is strongly influenced by both social and economic
factors. Obstacles in getting education can eradicate the career prospects and economic livelihood of teen parents. Also, relationships with both friends and family could be tensed as a result of social attitudes and stereotypes directed toward the pregnant teen (Amjad et al., 2019).
Accessibility to health care is paramount. Timely, appropriate, and sufficient maternal care during pregnancy is crucial for the mother and unborn child. Creating awareness about contraception methods is yet another important point. This consists of educating teenagers on contraceptive methods of birth control and encouraging them to embrace safe sex (Borovac et al.,
2019).
Cultural and societal beliefs regarding sexuality, contraception, and family planning are associated with effectiveness of health promotions (Kaplan, 2023). However, challenges might result from unequal access to information, affecting the efficiency of preventive measures.
