Sara is an aspiring chef who dreams of opening her own bakery. She recently graduated from
culinary school and has saved up some money to start her business. Sara has found the
perfect spot for her bakery but needs to calculate the costs involved in setting it up.
1.1 The rent for the bakery space is R 8 500 per month. If Sara plans to rent the space for
one year and 6 months, how much will she spend on rent in total? (2)
1.2 Sara needs to purchase baking equipment, including an oven, mixer, and refrigerator,
which costs a total of R 9 800. If she plans to pay 30% of the total cost upfront as a
deposit and finance the remaining amount with a loan.
1.2.1) How much money does she need to pay initially with the 30%? (1)
1.2.2) Calculate the total cost of the baking equipment if the amount after
the deposit needs to be paid back over two years at 8% simple interest. (3)
1.3 Sara plans to hire two assistant bakers to help with baking and customer service. If
each assistant earns R 75 per hour and works 40 hours per week, how much will
Sara spend on labor costs per month? (3)
1.4 To attract customers, Sara plans to offer a variety of baked goods, including cakes,
pastries, and bread. If she estimates that the cost of ingredients for each item is as
follows: R95 for a cake, R18 for pastries, and R22 for bread, and she wants to
maintain a 30% profit margin on each item, what should Sara price each item to
ensure a profit? (6)
