Patient can maintain CV function, protective reflexes, and the ability to respond to verbal and/or tactile stimulation. 4 characteristics of Moderate Sedation - ANSWERS1. Patient is able to respond purposefully to verbal commands or light tactile stimulation. 2. Patient is able to maintain his or her own protective reflexes and communicate verbally. 3. Patient is able to maintain adequate, spontaneous ventilation. 4. Patient has minimal variations in vital signs. Deep Sedation/Analgesia - ANSWERSA medically controlled state of depressed consciousness, not easily aroused. Patient can only respond to repeated and/or painful stimulation. Patient may require assistance in maintaining airway, even though ventilation may be adequate. Reflexes, ability to respond to verbal stimuli and/or tactile stimulation is impaired. General Anesthesia - ANSWERSmedication induced state of unconsciousness produced by anesthetic agents that results in some degree of muscular relaxation and absense of pain sensation through the patient's entire body. The patient cannot be aroused even through painful stimulation. Ventilation assistance is often needed, as well as frequent CV monitoring. Complications of moderate sedation/analgesia - ANSWERSrespiratory depression, airway obstruction, hypotension, hypertension, myocardial ischemia, dysrhythmia, and adverse medication reactions. Phase I (Stable, Healthy Adult) - ANSWERSAbsense of any psychological, metabolic, or medical conditions; a normal healthy adult. Phase II (Mild Systemic Disease) - ANSWERSCV Disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis, obesity, diabetes; well-controlled medical conditions.
