Kukhanya is a 15-year-old girl who recently broke her leg in a soccer match. Kukhanya
is enrolled in a school next to the library. He often visits the library after school and has
not associated with his peers since his accident. He has been feeling down since the
injury and has lost interest in talking about soccer. One day his teacher passed by the
library and noticed Kukhanya sitting in his usual corner. The teacher started talking to
the librarian explaining to his that Kukhanya is lately performing poorly in his studies and
cannot take part in his favourite soccer practice. During the conversation between the
teacher and the librarian, the librarian suggested bibliotherapy as an approach that can
assist Kukhanya to accept his broken leg, regain interest in his studies and joining his
friends again.
Based on the above scenario, discuss the term bibliotherapy and your role as a librarian
in this practice. List and analyse the steps that you will use to assist Kukhanya with the
process of bibliotherapy
Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic approach that involves the use of literature to
help individuals address emotional and psychological challenges they may be
facing. As a librarian, my role in bibliotherapy would be to provide Kukhanya
with appropriate reading materials that can help him understand and cope with
his feelings about his broken leg, as well as regain interest in his studies and
social activities.
The steps that I would use to assist Kukhanya with the process of
bibliotherapy include:
1. Understanding Kukhanya's situation: I would first take the time to talk to
Kukhanya and understand how he is feeling about his injury and its impact on
his life. This would help me to select the most relevant reading materials for
him.
2. Selecting appropriate reading materials: Based on my understanding of
Kukhanya's situation, I would select books or articles that address topics such
as coping with injuries, finding new hobbies or interests, and dealing with
feelings of isolation. These materials could include fiction or non-fiction
books, self-help guides, or articles on relevant topics.
3. Creating a reading plan: I would work with Kukhanya to create a reading
plan that outlines how often he should read, what materials he will read, and
what specific goals he hopes to achieve through reading. This plan would be
tailored to his individual needs and interests.
4. Providing guidance and support: I would be available to discuss the reading
materials with Kukhanya, answer any questions he may have, and provide
