, Fantasy is dreams and imagination, it is an escape from the real world. Fantasy may involve
dragons , unicorns or even a best friend.
The fantasy genre gives the children the opportunity to escape from the real world. Fantasy
genre allows children the freedom to imagine things. It allows the children to be creative
and it teaches the children metaphorical language.
The two main genres of fantasy
Texts that deal with the gothic( medieval settings with supernatural events taking
place for example, horror. The setting is unfamiliar, one would say in the middle
Ages, like game of thrones.
Texts that deal with magic realism( familiar settings where magical events take
place). The setting is normal or real world, but the events are fantastical.
According to Evans et al. 2017: 125, fantasy is popular with children, because it stimulates
their imagination, it provides an alternative space to explore problematic and disturbing
issues and usually leaves its readers feeling positive about life.
An example of a fantasy is beauty and the beast.
