CRANIAL NERVES
➢ The cranial nerves are the 12 paired sets of nerves that arise from the
cerebrum or brainstem and leave the central nervous system through cranial
foramina or fissures.
➢ All cranial nerves innervate structures in the head or neck.
➢ The Vagus nerve descends through the neck and into the thorax and
abdomen where it innervates viscera.

Olfactory
Olfactory (I)
The olfactory nerves run inferiorly from the olfactory bulb, though the perforated cribiform plate
nerve

The olfactory system transmits smell from detection of odorants
at the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity to the primary
olfactory cortex. This sense is mediated by specialized sensory
cells, called olfactory receptors, in the nasal cavity.
