Unit 40 P2 M1 Health and Social Care

Possible efeecs of dementi on in individuil’s heilch ind quilicy of life ind how chic will
ifeec chei fimily뢥

Someone with dementa will have a massive impact on their quality of life and also others
who are around them. Although, it depends on what type of dementa the individual has
there are a lot of common signs that would make their quality of life worse as they get
older.

Dementa starts with the individual forgetng things nnot necessary big oneso such as they
might forget to turn of a tab and therefore might food their apartment/house. As they get
older their symptoms are going to get worse they are then going to start to realise that they
have something to do with dementa nhowever, most people are going to disagree and
reject that they have dementa and that it’s slowly progressing into something more than
thato. Some of their family members are going to make them aware that they are forgetng
things ncan cause irritaton to the familyo. Their hearing and speech might be poorer as they
will have difcultes in understanding everything that might be happening around them. This
is going to afect their family because they might fnd it difcult to always lookout for their
family member with dementa. They might fnd it hard and possibly annoying that they will
have to repeat everything they say over and over again. As well as, they might have to fght
the urge to argue with the individual with dementa as if they say something that is false
they might fnd it irritatng and therefore they will fnd the need to correct them even when
they are wrong. It will be difcult for the family to adapt around the individual with
dementa, there will be moments when their family will have enough and they will send
them to a care home, due to a incapability of looking afer them, as well as, the
responsibility that caring for an individual with dementa comes with.

As the years follow by, they might start to forget to take showers this will have a massive
impact on their hygiene which are the usual signs of dementa. This might cause people to
turn away from them due to their poor hygiene, sometmes their family members will need
to remind them that they need to shower/take a bath. This will afect their family in a way
that they will have to remind the individual with dementa to shower if it gets really
seriously they might even have to supervise them whilst they are having it. This is because
they might forget to actually shower themselves they might turn on the tap and think that
they have washed even though they haven’t. Most people with dementa will fnd it difcult
to follow simple ‘routne steps’ whilst in the shower, so they might need someone who can
help them with that. The family members will also need to check the bathroom aferwards
to ensure that they have turned of the tap and things like that.

They might also start to forget that they need to eat or the other way round, they might
think that they didn’t eat and therefore have more food than they need. This will cause
either massive weight loss or weight gain. This can lead to anorexia and obesity. Also, as
they are going to be running out of food nif they eat more than they needo, it’s going to
afect them fnancially due to the fact that they will be spending a lot of their money on
