Access Code (located on the lid of your lab kit): AC-AOE Lab Report Format Expectations Utilize college level grammar and professional formatting when completing this worksheet. Submissions without proper formatting, all required photos or sufficient responses will be rejected. Prelab Questions 1. Explain the digestion that occurs in the oral cavity. Oral digestion is referred to as mechanical digestion. Mastication is how food particles in the mouth cavity are reduced in size. Saliva facilitates the process of chemical digestion, producing the enzymes needed to break down food. 2. What is the function of the liver in digestion? The vast majority of the amounts of chemicals in blood are regulated by the liver, which also excretes a substance called bile. This helps the liver get rid of trash. All blood that leaves the stomach and intestines ends up in the liver. 3. What role does the gall bladder play in digestion? The body needs bile from the liver, which is kept in the gallbladder and released into the duodenum, to break down and absorb dietary lipids and fats. 4. Why is the orientation of muscle of the stomach wall important? How does this contribute to its function? All of these orientations are necessary for the stomach to digest food effectively, which is a process that involves the stomach agitating and squeezing material. Although they can move in any direction, the muscle tissues that comprise the stomach wall prefer to move in circular, diagonal, and long axes. The hydrochloric acid breaks down the meal particles even further into chyme.
