1.1. Observation Experience
Northlands Primary School is located in Gaysing Road, Northdale. The school caters for
learners from grade R up to grade 7. Majority of students are from rural and underprivileged
areas. Principal and educators were very accommodating in allowing me to witness how the
lessons were carried out.
The school is big and has an assembly area and a big ground for sports activities. Each class
has around 40 students. Majority of learners are Zulu speaking and come from rural areas.
The kitchen is where the helpers cook for students since some students travel from far areas
and majority come from under privileged backgrounds. They ensure that all students have a
chance to eat.
This module helped me understand the various roles a teacher can play and many other
aspects. Teachers have to be flexible and able to adapt to different situations. During my
observation period I had the chance to go to a school and view lessons. Group discussions
allowed for me to view other peoples’ opinions and understand their point of view. Notes
and videos were available for the module to help people understand what the assignments
should consist of.
1.2. Reflection on teaching observation
The various concepts relating to professional teaching and the challenges teachers face.
With research and classroom observation student teachers look at things from a teacher’s
perspective and how to deal with the situation. The different units help us gain insight on
how learner’s backgrounds and environment impact on their learning as well. Teachers
should be able to communicate with other teachers and the parents in order to make use of
the various learning and teaching styles. With insight on new ideas, this could help learners
develop at a faster pace and gain more understanding and knowledge on a subject.
All the information discussed in this module plays an important role in becoming a
professional teacher. The communication between a pupil and a teacher is essential to
promote good attributes and characteristics in both pupil and teacher.
