1.20 Estimate the amount of copy or printing paper that you use every year. A 500-sheet
ream of copy paper has an approximate mass of 5 pounds (2.27 kg). How much of
this consumption is truly necessary, and how much of your own paper consumption
could be avoided? State your assumptions.
SOLUTION
For example, on average, if you use 15 pages per day; then on a yearly basis, you
use 5475 pages (15 x 365).
5475 pages 5 pounds pounds of paper
( )( ) = 54.75

- Print only when necessary; convert online articles, emails, online receipts, etc., to
PDF and save them electronically. Submit reports electronically when appropriate.
- If you have to print, print on both sides of the paper.
1.21 In many parts of the world, it is expected that internal combustion engines will
remain in use for at least another 20 years. We can reduce the amount of CO2
released into the atmosphere by driving our cars less. What would be the reduction
in pounds of CO2 released into the atmosphere by a car that is driven 10,000 miles
(16,000 km) per year instead of 12,000 miles (19,000 km) per year? State your
assumptions.

SOLUTION
Twenty pounds of CO2 is released into the atmosphere for every gallon of gasoline
burned. Assuming an average fuel economy of 25 mpg, then
reduction in the amount of CO2
miles gallon 20 pounds of CO2
= (12,000 - 10,000)
year 25 miles gallon
= 1600 pounds of CO2 per year
1.22 The U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s recent data regarding the average annual
miles driven per driver by age group is shown in the accompanying table. Assuming
an average fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon, calculate the amount of CO2
released into the atmosphere by gender and age group. Present your results in a
similar tabular form.
