Conceptual Framework Describe the theoretical basis for the study Implementing bedside shift report has been a largely discussed topic in the nursing literature. Unfortunately, sustaining this practice in real-world settings has been a challenge. This literature review considers articles on nurse bedside shift report implementation and strategies that may lead to successful practice sustainability (Dorvil, 2018, p. 21). Multiple institutions identify communication and shift-to-shift handoffs as a source of clinical errors. Conducting handoffs at the bedside has been proposed as a potential solution to improve the quality of communication at the change of shift (Mardis et al., 2016, p. 54). Exclusion criteria included articles that were not handoff-specific (i.e., solely about duty hours, general communication, ward rounds); focused on inter- or intrahospital transfer; anecdotal or had no data; or letters to the editor, commentaries, editorials, and newsletter articles (Mardis et al., 2016, p. 55). Thirty-nine relevant articles about bedside shift-to-shift handoffs were identified by our literature search. In addition, two other relevant articles were identified in our review of the reference sections of included articles. Thus, we included 41 articles in our systematic review. Of note, three pairs of articles used what appeared to be the same data set, but they reported different qualitative outcomes. Forty (98%) articles focused on nursing handoffs and (2%) article focused on nursing assistant handoffs (Mardis et al., 2016, p. 55).
