Limited government - ANSWER-- Subject to strict legal limits on the uses of power, so that it would not threaten people's liberty. Representative government - ANSWER-- One in which the people would govern through the selection of their representatives. Social contract/inalienable rights (natural rights) - ANSWER-- John Locke claimed that government is founded on this. Locke claimed that people living in a state of nature can enjoy certain inalienable rights- life, liberty, and property. Constitution - ANSWER-- The fundamental law that defines how a government will legitimately operate operate- the method for choosing its leaders, the institutions through which these leaders will work... Virginia Plan (the large state plan) - ANSWER-- Separate judicial and executive branches as well as a two chamber congress that would have supreme authority in all areas "in which the separate states are incompetent" particularly defense and interstate trade. New Jersey Plan (small state plan) - ANSWER-- Called for a stronger national government than that provided for by the Articles of Confederation it would have the power to tax and to regulate commerce among the states. Great Compromise - ANSWER-- Provided for a bicameral (2 chamber) congress. One chamber, the House of Representatives, would be apportioned on the basis of population. States with larger populations would have more House members than states with smaller populations. Each state would have at least 1 representative.
