Cell component Function of cell component
Nucleus The nucleus control the movement of substances between the
nucleus and cytoplasm, nucleoli produce ribosomes and
chromosomes consist of genes that control cellular structure and
direct cellular functions
Ribosomes Protein synthesis occurs in ribosomes.
Cytoplasm Site of all intracellular activities except those occurring in the
nucleus.
Cell wall Strengthens the cell, gives the cell shape and keeps it sturdy.
Cell membrane Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
Chloroplast Contains chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.
Vacuole Filled with cell sap to help keep the cell turgid (i.e. enlarged, swollen
with water).
Mitochondria Site of aerobic cellular respiration reactions that produce most of a
cell’s ATP.
