NR 509 Week 8 Reflection
NR 509 Week 8 Reflection Reflect upon PO1 and provide two (2) or more examples of how you specifically achieved or had exposure to this outcome during this course. Over the last eight weeks in the advanced health assessment course, there has been many skills and knowledge bases that have been gained in order to prepare for future practice. As a proficient nurse practitioner, it is expected by patients that the nurse practitioner should provide high quality, safe, patient-centered care grounded in holistic health principles, this is known as program outcome 1. This outcome is in line with the masters of science nurse essentials I: background for practice from sciences and humanities. The use of shadow health in this course is one way that students have been able to practice and become proficient in assessment skills and provide patient- centered care. Virtual simulations are a great resource for distance learning students as they provide situations that help student pull together the application of classroom material and the use of clinical reasoning to treat a patient along with an opportunity to gain constructive feedback in a non-threatening environment (Carman et. al., 2017). The only downfall was that the tie spent on the virtual reality patients is not an accurate reflection of a true clinical experience. However, these situations fulfill the program outcome listed above. A second reflection of the program outcome was the use of benchmarking exams, such as the 3P examination. This examination enhances potential success on certification examinations as well as readiness based on the current school’s instructional retention by each student (Gravel, 2018). Lastly, the use of immersion weekend help to focus students on proficiency of the head-to-toe assessment as a advanced practice nurse. This experience was a added value to prepare students for high quality care in the upcoming clinical classes. Review the results of your 3P examination. Identify three (3) content domains in which your performance was the lowest percentage as compared to the national average. In order to provide high-quality service to the future as a class, we took a predictor exam called the 3P. Preparedness examinations evaluate the students’ knowledge of Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics, Advanced Health Assessment (Gravel, 2018). The lowest domains in this exam for this student was Urology, Dermatology, and Respiratory. I find it ironic that the three areas they were my lowest scored where areas that as a nurse I have little to no experience in. These results help to show what areas need greater improvement. Create a self-guided quality improvement plan. Based on the results it is important to change the current plan for study and future certification. To add on to the future course work I am adding a short term goal of one hour a week to be spent on review of pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and health assessment of all areas but giving specific focus to that of Urology, Dermatology, and Respiratory Disorders. Also adding in other disorders. This goal will be achieved through the use of study tools such as the Leik FNP review guide and past lecture notes and textbooks. A long term goal is to repeat the predictor exam at the conclusion of the master's program and achieve proficiency of at least 87% along with marked improvement in the three areas that were the weakest in the first predictor exam. One plan for achieving this goal will be to take practice exams at least once a month to allow familiarity with the way questions are worded and to provide greater focus on areas that need to be reviewed and studied.
