Short report of experiment 1: Synthesis of a sunscreen agent, dibenzalacetone
Name : Tymo Zwakenberg
S-number : 4326253
TA : Ali & Isabella
Date : 22-05-2023
Figure 1: Overview of the mechanism of the performed reaction.
Table 1: Overview of the used compounds during the experiment.
Compound g/mol g or mL mmol eq
NaOH 40 2.05 g 50
Ethanol 46.07 16 ml 283.39
Benzaldehyde 106.12 2 ml 19.68
Acetone 58.08 0.75 ml 10.21
Acetic acid 60.05 2 x 10 ml 174.69
dibenzalacetone 234.29
Introduction
In order to get acquainted with purification methods, a recrystallization of a synthesized
sunscreen agent is performed. As can be seen in figure 1, 2 benzaldehyde molecules and an
acetone molecule within the right solution could form a dibenzalacetone. In order to see
whether the reaction is performed in the right way, UV-VIS analysis is used to see if the
sunscreen agent actually protects against certain UV-lights (A & B).
Results and Discussion
Yield of crystals obtained after recrystallization
(milli)grams : 1.49
mmol : 6.36
Yield % : 62.34%
Melting point of obtained crystals : 108℃
Melting point of literature : 104-107℃ (sigmaaldrich), 110-111℃ (manual)
