Introduction Human trafficking has become one of the most lucrative industries in the crime world and is only second to drug trafficking (Ramsey, 2011). Although human trafficking is not a new beast, even being traced back to ancient times of conquest, human trafficking has become a primary security issue in the last couple of decades with a dramatic increase in numbers due to things such as an increase of globalization, technology advancement and communication ease. “In recent years, human trafficking has been identified as a form of modern slavery… and as one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time” (Belser and DanailovaTrainor, 2006). In addition to these advancements, a large portion of human trafficking and specifically sex trafficking can be traced to poverty induced after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989. In 2003, there were only 12.6 million trafficked human beings (EURPOL, 2003). This is a drastically different number than the current (2012) 20.9 million trafficked human beings (Global Report on Trafficking, 2012). This is a 60% increase in less than ten years. In addition to its growth in recent years, the crime of human trafficking invites many other crimes along with it and is completely succumbed by criminal activity. Human trafficking is of concern to multiple facets of security globally. It is seen as a human rights security issue, a public health issue, an organized crime issue, labour issue, and also border control issue (Belser and Danailova-Trainor, 2006).
