Terminology:
Iambic pentameter – ten syllables per line; stressed, unstressed, stressed, unstressed…
Iambic dimeter – 4 syllables per line
Iambic tetrameter – 8 syllables per line
Anaphora – repetition in the beginning of multiple lines.
Volta – indicates a turn in thought. (yet, but)
Euphemism – a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or
blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing; used to ‘soften the blow’.
Romanticism/Romantic era – (same as art) focussed on going back to nature and turning away from
technology and capitalism. Born out of frustration around the industrial revolution.
Sibilance – sound device of an alliteration of the “s” sound; usually to emulate a sound or create an
ominous tone.
