, Pedro A Spanish film director & screenwriter; acclaimed as one of the most internationally s
Spanish filmmakers. His films are recognised for their use of melodrama, irreverent h

Almodóvar colours, glossy décor, nods to pop culture and complex narratives. Often, themes of L
issues, family, passion and identity are featured in Almodóvar films.
When Francoist Spain came to an end, La Movida Madrilea, a cultural rebirth, began and this is when Almodóvar's
too. His early movies encapsulated the era's spirit of sexual and political liberation.

Almodóvar was born on September 25th, 1949, in Calzada De Calatrava, a small rural town of Ciudad Real a prov
La Mancha in Spain. He has two older sisters, Antonia and María Jesús, and one brother – Agustin. His mother, Fra
Caballero, who passed away in 1999, read and translated letters for the neighbourhood's illiterate residents. His fat

in Western Spain, hoping for him to become a priest. In this new town, there was a cinema and Almodóvar claims
became my real education, much more than the one I received from the priest".
Almodóvar, who dreamed of being a director, moved to Madrid in 1967 against the wish of his parents. Almodóvar
taught after Franco, the dictator of Spain, shut down the National School of Cinema in Madrid. Almodóvar took on
professions to support himself, including selling second-hand goods in the Madrid flea market El Rastro and servin
administrative assistant for Telefónica for 12 years. He only had to work until three in the afternoon, which left him
of the day to work on his films.
Madrid's flourishing alternative cultural scene became the perfect
scenario for Almodóvar's social talents. He was a crucial figure in La
Movida Madrileña (the Madrilenian Movement), a cultural renaissance
that followed the death of Francisco Franco. Alongside Fabio
McNamara, Almodóvar sang in a glam rock parody duo.
