Rite Aid Exam (Role of the Pharmacy Technician) (2023/2024) Graded A+ Pharmacy Technician An individual working in a pharmacy who, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assists in pharmacy activities that do not require the professional judgement of a pharmacist Technician Duties answer the phone, gather general health info, enter patient info, prepare prescriptions, assist with compounding medications, stock shelves, prevent errors, maintain records, assist with inventory, check for and remove expired medications etc. (most states don't allow technicians to work in a pharmacy without a pharmacist present) Obligations Ensure the health and safety of the patient, be honest, maintain high standards of integrity and conduct, assist the pharmacist, respect the patient, protect patient's confidentiality, stay up to date with pharmacy advancements, new drugs, and regulations. Qualities and Skills Good verbal and nonverbal communication, minimize stress, balance out duties, adapt to change quickly, maintain professionalism, have working knowledge of computers, email, internet, and other electronic devices or programs. Registration Process of making a list of people working as technicians, done by state boards to keep track of pharmacy technicians, may not address educational and training background Certification Process by which a nongovernmental organization recognizes an individual who meets predetermined qualifications specified by that organization, can be certified by taking national certification exam through PTCB or NHA, or by meeting state certification requirements Licensure The process by which permission is granted to an individual to practice their occupation after it is determined that the individual has the maximum level of competency to practice safely, may require registration plus certification and/or education and training to become licensed Community Pharmacy Technician Prepare meds for outpatients, receive electronic and fax prescriptions, assist patients dropping off prescriptions, take patient refill requests, assist patients picking up prescriptions Hospital pharmacy Technician Prepare medications for inpatients, injectable meds, unit-dose meds, and bulk orders for commonly used meds. Maintain crash carts, dispense and maintain floor stock, deliver medication orders throughout the hospital (some states allow tech-check-tech programs) Long-Term Care Pharmacy Technician Prepare meds for patients residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, prepare med cards, maintain emergency fill kits Mail-Order Pharmacy Technician Prepare meds for patients receiving prescriptions through the mail, commonly dispense 90-days supply for meds, communicate with patients over the phone, email, or fax. Nuclear Pharmacy Technician Maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, follow special procedures for handling radioactive material, prepare radioactive materials used for diagnosing or treating certain conditions DUTIES PHARM TECHS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PERFORM take new prescriptions or med orders over the phone, counsel patients, clarify prescription or medication orders with a prescriber over the phone, administer immunizations, perform medication use reviews, transfer prescription to or from pharmacies, check the final order before dispensing to the patient.
