Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process involved in plants that will help in changing the light energy
into chemical energy. It is required in the production of food for plants and it involves both
carbon dioxide as well as water needed to help produce glucose and oxygen. The site at
which photosynthesis occurs is the leaves and the chloroplast which is important structure
found within plants contains chlorophyll which is a green pigment that would absorb light
needed for photosynthesis.
Equation
C02 + H20 C6H1206 + 602
Light dependent stage reactions
This occurs on the thylakoid membranes
1. Sunlight energy will hit chlorophyll in the thylakoid membranes.
2. Water is split which will result in oxygen being released as a waste gas and provides
hydrogen ion that is used to make important ATP as well as NADPH.
3. These will then pass into the second stage of photosynthesis known as the light
independent stage.
Importance
Light dependent reactions are important to be able to convert light energy into the much
needed chemical energy. The important and main role within light dependent reactions
within photosynthesis is to collect sunlight energy and from there effectively split water
molecules to the vital ATP needed for energy production as well as NADPH.
Light independent stage reactions
This occurs in stroma of the chloroplast
Does not require light for this stage to occur.
