Role Card 1 & 4 - Ben & Jerry’s Production Manager & Local
community: Vermont’s residents and Ben & Jerry’s employees
Scenario
Sales have been growing recently and production needs to be increased in order to keep up
with demand. Ben & Jerry’s has always been an ethical company and has been famous in the
local community for protecting the local environment and developing the local area.
Ben & Jerry’s is considering extending its factory in Vermont. The extension of the factory would
partly destroy a local nature reserve and because of the increase in production, there would be
more pollution. This would lead to more heavy traffic through a built-up area of the town, where
the local school is situated.
P4- The ethical concerns facing the local community are the fact that there will be more pollution
within the area coming from both congestion and the factory itself, also the space the factory is
taking as it would partly destroy a local nature reserve as well as the traffic affecting the local
school. For the pollution, the nature reserve and the nearby school would be affected by the
harmful gases emitted by the vehicles that pass by and the factory. Furthermore, with the result
of the heavy traffic it would create even more pollution which can affect the children in schools
and the animals nearby. In addition to this, taking up too much space is another ethical concern
as they are also partly destroying a local nature reserve, this would result in animals being
harmed by the pollution of noise and unclean air which is unacceptable especially with an
ethical business like Ben & Jerry’s. Overall, the result of this plan harms the environment as well
as the living organisms around it.
M3- From listening to the Production manager, I can see that he/she is focusing on business
concerns such as keeping up with demand due to the increase of sales. However, Ben & Jerry’s
are an ethical company which means that they protect the environment and help develop their
local area. With the result of this, the best course of action for Ben & Jerry’s is to reduce the
amount of pollution they would make, reduce the space they are taking up or create another
factory, and encourage local employees to use public transport or walk to work. This way the
factory can still be built, they would be more environmentally friendly and they would support the
local transport. In return, the local community can provide transport from a bus station straight to
the factory, maybe even a new road with a walk path to reduce congestion in built up places.
The bus route can support the cause for transport for their employees and help provide jobs if a
new road is necessary. As well as this, the walk path with the new road can be used for both
cyclists or for walking by employees.
