- Manual Handling - Glassware
- Glassware - Driving
- Field Risks - Bunsen Burners
- Bunsen Burners
Chemical Hazards; Both ALS and College deal with chemical hazards. This includes spillages, contamination, storage and handling. ALS have
more hazardous chemicals. Certain acids cannot be smelt or be drained due to environmental issues. For example HCL is a acid required in
certain practicals like titrations . Other chemicals College use are Sulfuric acid which is corrosive to skin and solvents used in chromatography
that are volatile. Certain chemicals are also a fire hazard such as ethanol which is frequently used.
Manual Handling; ALS technician have to do heavy lifting when collecting equipment and chemicals as well as unloading heavy equipment
from trucks. This can cause injuries if employees can’t lift properly.
Glassware; Both ALS and College have to be aware with glassware incase of cracks or damages which may cause leaks or lead to shattering when
heated. Shattering of glassware can lead to chemical exposures to the skin as well as cuts to skin and face. This can cause blindness and external
skin damage.
Field Risk; This only applies to ALS due to field research they do. Hazards associated with field research include insects/animal bites, weather,
sprained muscles and dust issues (e.g. Asbestos). Asbestos can cause lung damage in enhalled for a long duration.
Driving/Vehicles; Both ALS and College deal with vehicle safety. ALS have to be aware in the docking area and College have bus areas.
