Module 1: The Cell: The basic unit of life
What are cells?
● A cell is the basic unit that makes up all living things
● It was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1655
Animal and Plant Cells:
Types of Human Cells:
● Muscle cells
● Nerve cells
● Blood cells
Diagram of a plant cell:
Don't look at the:
● Amyloplast
● Druse Crystal
● Raphide Crystal
, Diagram of an animal cell:
Don’t look at the:
● Micro tubules
● Pinocytotic Vesicle
Table of the different parts of a cell and its
functions
Cell wall A layer that surrounds the cell, to provide rigidity and strength
Cell membrane Controls what enters and exits the cell
Centriole Aids in cell division
Vacuoles Membrane-bound sac that stores excess water and waste products and soluble pigments
Chloroplast Aids in photosynthesis
Nucleus Contains DNA and controls cell activities
Ribosomes Proteins are synthesized inside a cell.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Proteins are assembled here
Lysosomes Contain digestive enzymes
Golgi Body Packages substances in the vesicles
Cytoplasm Contains nutrients and water
Nucleolus Site where the proteins are assembled
