English Composition 102: Section 5 Paper 1, Final Draft (GRADED A+) Throughout history, race has been used and seen as a form of control and power, where in America it is used to get you to the top of the hierarchy. Michael Omi and Howard Winant write about this in their text “Racial Formation in the United States From the 1900’s”. Omi and Winant discuss the history of racial formation and explain its relevance to the social structure and how we as individuals identify within these racial categories. They use the terms hegemony and racial projects to represent the impact that race has on us today, while explaining the role the government and religion plays in the formation of our racial identity. In Obama’s speech “A More Perfect Union” he supports the logic shared by Omi and Winant when he discusses how race, religion, and politics shape and define our structure. While speaking on the behalf of not only being a black man, but being a black man in America, he shares a speech that highlights the need to come together, regardless of race, color, or ethnicity in order to understand and work through racial and social differences. Both texts explain the role that race plays and the impact it has on racial and social hierarchies which impacts how we as individuals identify ourselves and others.
