Different types of telephones:

- Public telephone/payphone
- Mobile phone / mobile (BE) – cell phone / cellular phone / cellular (AE) (= gsm)
- Smartphone
- Extension
o Een van de vele telefoonlijnen die in een groot gebouw op een central system zijn
aangesloten en allemaal een ander nummer hebben.
o Een van de telefoons in een huis die allemaal hetzelfde nummer hebben.

4.3.2) Reading telephone numbers
Telefoonnummers worden voorgelezen cijfer voor cijfer en niet in groep.

 British people often say double or triple for a number that is repeated.
 Americans say the numbers individually.
 Example: 1-617-633-7754
o UK: one, six one seven, six double three, double seven five four
o US: one, six one seven, six three three, seven seven, five four

The number 0:

 ‘Zero’ is normaalgezien de correcte manier om het getal 0 te zeggen, maar Engelstaligen
zullen vaak ‘oh’ zeggen als de letter O bij het lezen van getallen.
o Example: +44 7402 302405  plus 44, seven four oh two, three oh two four oh five
 Groepen getallen die eindigen op meerdere 0’s worden meestal gelezen al seen enkel getal.
o Example: 1-800-282-3000  one, eight hundred, two eight two, three thousand

Intonation: wanneer u nummers uitspreekt, gebruik een stijgende intonatie voor elke groep, behalve
voor de laatste groep, waar u een dalende toon moet gebruiken.

1) Check it’s a good/convenient time to call
o I know you’re very busy. Is this a good time to talk?
o Are you busy? I can call back later if you’re in the middle of something.
2) Have some small talk
o How’s everything over there in Madrid?
o I heard about… That’s great news!
