1.1 You are a paralegal advisor at a Paralegal Advice Centre in your community.
Describe how you would deal with EACH of the problems below. In your answer, you
need to mention whom or which office you would approach for assistance and provide
a reason for your answer.
(a) Mr Barnard has just turned 65 years and needs to retire. He is unhappy since an
amount of R10 000 will be deducted from his pension benefit because it is alleged
that he stole a company laptop.
(b) After the matter has been resolved, the money was paid back into his bank
account. The bank refuses to let Mr. Barnard withdraw an amount of R50 000.
(c) Mr Barnard would like to sell his old house and buy a bigger one in town.
(d) Mr Barnard and his neighbour Jairus do not get along very well, because when it is
windy, the leaves from Jairus’ tree fall onto Mr Barnard’s driveway.
(e) Mr Barnard’s unemployed daughter has applied several times for her five-yearold
son’s grant (child grant) but was told by an official that she must learn to abstain
from sexual relations.

2.1 Legal Aid SA plays an important role by providing free legal aid, especially in criminal
cases. With reference to the above statement, explain the role of Paralegal Advice Centres
in South Africa.
2.2 You are involved in a Paralegal Advice Centre in the Marble Hall district. The
management committee meets on the 15th of July 2022 to consider the budget of the
advice centre. What are the issues that need to be considered?
