The knowledge test can be administered in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language.
If an interpreter is needed for a behind-the-wheel driving test, The Department of Motor Vehicles
provides interpreters at no cost to the customer. If you need an interpreter, inform the DMV and
they will schedule an appointment for a time when a foreign language or an ASL interpreter is
available.
Knowledge Test Information
The knowledge test consists of 36 multiple-choice questions. Applicants should correctly answer
at least 30 questions to pass the test.
All information needed to pass the test can be found in the California Driver Handbook.
The use of testing aids is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, the California
Driver Handbook, cheat sheets, and/or electronic communication devices such as a cell phone,
handheld computer, etc.
The DMV utilizes an automated TouchScreen Terminal (TST) to administer the knowledge test.
To allow for sufficient time to complete the test, knowledge tests will not be administered after
4:30 p.m.
You will have three chances to pass.
