Basal Ganglia/ Corpus Striatum

- Important for posture and movement

- Components:

 Caudate nucleus
 Putamen
 Globus Pallidus (Pallidum)

- Grouped according to anatomical position:

 Putamen + Globus Pallidus = Lentiform
nucleus
o Lie next to each other

- Grouped according to function:

 Putamen + Caudate nucleus = Striatum/ Neostriatum
o Separated by the internal capsule anterior limb
o But functionally very similar

Part Position Function

Striatum

- Lateral to the internal capsule & Globus Pallidus - Receives most motor input of
Putamen - From medial to lateral on horizontal section: Corpus Striatum parts from the
 Internal capsule > Globus Pallidus > Lateral motor cortex of frontal lobe
medullary lamina (Segment of white matter
separating GP & Putamen) > Putamen > External
capsule > Claustrum > Extreme capsule > Cortex of
insula
- Large head & tapering, curved tail
Caudate - Head:
nucleus  Is separated from the Putamen by the internal
capsule
 But at anterior end is continuous with Putamen
beneath anterior limb of internal capsule
o Most anterior part of Striatum has
connections with Limbic system
 Forms a bulge in the lateral ventricle anterior horn
lateral wall
- Tail:
 Passes posteriorly following curvature of lateral
ventricle > Ends by sitting in the roof of inferior
horn


- Medial to Putamen where it is separated by the Lateral
Globus Pallidus medullary lamina
- Medial/ internal segment
