Exam (elaborations) Verbs and Agreement FULL STUDY Verbs and Agreement FULL STUDY GUIDE 2023. READING ASSIGNMENT A Quick Review At the beginning of Nouns, Pronouns, and Adjectives, we introduced the eight parts of speech in the English language. We repeat them here so you can quickly review them before you begin your studies in this unit: Nouns name persons, places, things, qualities, ideas, and actions. Pronouns are substitutes for nouns. I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, mine, yours, and ours are examples of pronouns. Adjectives describe, or modify, nouns and pronouns. Verbs show action, implied action, or a state of being. Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Prepositions join nouns and pronouns with other words in sentences. Words like to, in, for, before, and with are prepositions. Conjunctions connect words or groups of words. Interjections are words that express strong feelings. Wow, Ouch, and Oh! are examples of interjections. Verbs Defined Verbs are words that express action, perceived action, or a state of being. In verbs like cook, sing, run, and talk, the action is obvious. Other verbs, such as live, hear, smell, want, think, and consider, express actions that are perceived or sensed. Finally, some verbs simply suggest a state of being, such as is, am, are, was, seem, become, appear, grow, and remain. Base Forms of Verbs The base forms of verbs are verbs in their simplest forms. They’re the forms we start with when we use verbs. Examples of base forms are speak, write, swim, sing, consider, seem, and be.
