Eurasia A hundred years ago, Halford Mackinder foretold a significant threat of worldwide domination from the east. He helped shape strategic thinking about significant power conflict. Mackinder designed his first lecture called "the geographical Pivot of history" (Fettweis, 2000). He suggested that, with the advent of intercontinental rail, the Eurasian heartland, which comprised central Asia and Russia, could effectively exploit its natural resources, which have seen many powers dominate the region.
