Motivation, Corruption, & Resistance: Slaying Goliath: The Passionate Resistance to Privatization and the Fight to Save America’s Public Schools, by Diana Ravitch (2020) is a revolutionary text that exposes corporations’ attempts to eliminate public education and replace it with privatized schools. After reading the assigned chapters from the Ravitch text, all students should respond to each of the following questions with substantial responses. Chapter Seven: Rewards and Punishment Are Not Good Motivators According to Ravitch what were some of the mistaken assumptions and faulty beliefs about motivating students and teachers held by No Child Left behind and Race to the Top proponents? According to Ravitch, what is the goal for merit pay for teachers? Does merit pay for teachers work to increase student achievement scores? Explain? Chapter Eight: Bait and Switch: How Liberals Were Duped into Embracing School Choice According to Ravitch, did charter schools that promised creativity, innovation, and excellence as a result of deregulation deliver on that promise? Chapter Nine: School Choice, Deregulation, and Corruption According to Ravitch, charter schools were riddled with rampant corruption, gross manipulation of data, misuse of public funds, and schemes to move public monies into private hands. She documents shocking instances of corruption that have resulted from the obliteration of the state regulations to advantage the charter school industry. How did these policies play out in the state of Arizona? While Ravitch thoroughly documents how billions of dollars have left public control and enriched the owners of private and charter schools, how does this scandal survive and how does it impact children in the public schools? Chapter Ten: The Resistance Fights Back According to Ravitch, how did the educators and parents fight back against the Disruptors’ hidden behind the beneficent mask, to counter their actual goals: privatization and profits in Douglas County, Colorado? Chapter Eleven: The Resistance Goes National According to Ravitch, what falsehood did the Disrupters propagate regarding the issue of school choice? Chapter Twelve: Dark Money in Massachusetts and Connecticut What is dark money? According to Ravitch, how did the voters of Massachusetts stop a dark money referendum that would have removed the cap on the number of charter schools permitted in the state? Submission Instructions: Copy all the questions for the assignment, paste them into a Microsoft Word document, and respond to them all with substantial responses (approximately 125 words for each question). Each Assignment (not to be confused with Discussion Board Assignments) will be turned in under “Assignments”. Spelling and grammar will be factored into your grade. The instructor will provide you with feedback under “Assignments”. Cite one resource that disagrees with Ravitch’s views in any part of this assignment and briefly describe the author’s view. Give your opinion at least once per assignment after stating Ravitch’s views. This should be substantial and not simply agree or disagree.
