BOOK SUMMARY
CHAPTER 1
Prescribed Book: Multicultural Education- Second Edition:
In chapter one, you would come across terms frequently used when discussing diversity, such as
"race, ethnicity, class, gender, language and disability=.
It is very important that you familiarize yourself with these terms and understand them properly, as
they are used throughout the module.
What do you think the definition of "Race" is?
Does the word "Racism" derive from the word "Race”?
If you did take the time to look into the question I posed, you would most likely have realized that
"Racism" is a word derived from the word "Race".
Racism:
Racism is the belief that one’s own race is superior to all other races. It is based on false beliefs
that physical characteristics of a racial group, determines ones’ intelligence.
E.g. Only white people can become doctors.
Racism is discussed more widely in Chapter 2: (Understanding Diversity and Culture), of your
prescribed book- "Multicultural Education- Second Edition", which I'm hoping most of you have
already come across.

6. Educating for social action
Multicultural education is a multidimensional educational approach which accords equal
recognition to all cultural groups and which provides all learners with a meaningful and relevant
educational experience.
This chapter clearly illustrates that multicultural education is still a contested field where different
understanding, definitions and approaches may be found. It also shows that different approaches
to integration can be found in different schools, but also within the same institution.
