Unit 21 – Training and development

Assignment 2

To: Manager, Amazon

From: Training and development consultant

Subject: induction for new employees

Date: 20th March 2023

Introduction

This report will plan a detailed induction programme for a group of new employees starting at
Amazon. It will assess the advantages and disadvantages of the factors that are likely to make the
training effective and it will evaluate how the training will impact the business and its employees.

P5 – Plan an appropriate induction programme for a group of new starts in a selected business
using own research.

 Induction

Induction is the way in which new employees become familiar with their jobs and the workplace
they will be working in. Some companies have a list of things that need to be covered during the
induction process to ensure that the employee understands their job and the company they are
working for. However, there are other companies that may have a more relaxed approach and not
have a formal checklist.

 Purpose of an induction

The goal of an induction is to make sure that new employees become a part of the company
smoothly and effectively, benefiting both the company and the new staff member, providing a
comprehensive and thorough induction process can increase the likelihood of retaining new
employees as they get familiar with their new role and the organisation. It's important because it
establishes the expectations and foundation for both parties early on, including integrity, values,
respect for colleagues and corporate social responsibility.

 Amazon’s current induction programme

Amazon’s current induction process starts by sending a confirmation email to the new employee
regarding their Day 0 which is the day of their induction training. The training lasts 3.5 hours and it is
paid by the organisation. Depending on the job role, induction can take place on-site or online. Also,
depending on the location the role is based at, the induction training will be combined with
employee’s first day at the job. This means that they receive the induction and start their job right
after that.

The training is delivered in a presentation format, and it includes, learning and development, human
resources as well as health and safety. After the induction has been delivered it is required that
employees complete a health and safety test. Without it they can’t start working.

, An advantage of induction is that the training is paid by Amazon. This can be a motivational factor
and encourage employees to take it seriously. By Amazon paying their training the company shows
that respects their time and it can benefit the company culture.

A strength of the induction training is the health and safety test. It ensures that the new employees
have retained the knowledge required to keep them safe within the workplace. Therefore, the cost
of the induction training is an investment to Amazon as it is going to prevent the organisation from
potential future issues.

Another benefit of this initial training is that sometimes the induction day is combined with
employee’s first day of work. This can increase the effectiveness of the training as the information
has just been delivered to them and they can put it into practise immediately.

The first advantage of Amazon’s induction is that it is delivered in a presentation. This format of
delivering information can be ineffective because employees are not engaged in any activities
therefore, there is a lower retention rate.

The second advantage of the induction is that employees are only tested on health and safety
information. This is a disadvantage as Amazon can’t ensure the effectiveness of the training is.

Another disadvantage of this induction is that usually employee’s do not start working the same day
as their induction. This means that employees will first attend their training and they will come in on
a different day to start working. Therefore, there is a higher chance that they will have forgotten
majority of the information delivered to them.
