NURSING 1 Dental case study Distinction Level Assignment .
BACKGROUND OF STUDY Pulpitis is the inflammation of the pulp, the inner soft tissue of the tooth containing blood supply, nerves, lymphatics and undifferentiated cells. It can affect one tooth or more (Kiranmayi, Anumala & Kirubakaran, 2019). Pulpitis is more common in adult females over 45 years of age as compared to adult male population. Bacteria is the most frequent etiological factor for the occurrence of pulpitis and the most prevalent pulpitis is the asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis affecting mostly both upper and lower molar (Summit, Robins & Schwartz, 2021) BACKGROUND REVIEW OF THE CONDITION (pulpitis) Types of pulpitis Pulpitis can be classified in to two types according to the extent of the infection and severity a) Reversible pulpitis. In this type of pulpitis, there is limited inflammation and the tooth can be restored through simple filling since the pulp tissue is not destroyed. It is majorly caused by noxious stimuli like trauma and thermal shock b) Irreversible pulpitis. In irreversible pulpitis there is persistent inflammation inside the rigid dentin which in turn compromises circulation, making the pulp necrotic predisposing it to infection. In this type, the tooth cannot be saved through conservative management hence the only remedy is tooth extraction. It maybe symptomatic or asymptomatic and it is mostly due to bacteria involvement through the caries c) Acute pulpitis. It refers to an extensive acute inflammation of the pulp. It occurs as result of reversible pulpitis. It majorly occurs due to defective restoration where there has been recurrent carries
